Hogar Comunitario: una visita/a visit

El 23 de Julio del 2008, Melanie Evans y yo hicimos una visita de seguimiento a HOGAR COMUNITARIO. Hablamos con Jutta, un miembro del personal quien nos proveyó con un recorrido del centro. Hogar Comunitario cuida a mujeres solteras en su ultimo mes de embarazo, provee enfermeras-parteras para el alumbramiento de sus bebes y continua estos cuidados por un mes después del alumbramiento. Los hijos de estas mujeres son además cuidados durante este periodo de dos meses. Muy pocos bebes son dados en adopción. Este centro tiene una capacidad para cuidar 6 madres y sus hijos. Durante nuestra visita descubrimos que una de las mujeres embarazadas apenas tenía once años! En el momento de nuestra visita todas las 6 camas estaban llenas a su capacidad. Durante su estancia las mujeres son instruidas en aptitudes lucrativas de modo que puedan sobrevivir por si mismas y cuiden a sus hijos. Además son proveídas clases prenatales al igual que clases en nutrición.

Hicimos un recorrido del área ampliada donde hacen cerámica, el área de taller de los niños, el patio del taller general y el “jardín” orgánico de hongos sobre el techo. Hay planes de ampliar el jardín de hongos yaqué los restaurantes en San Cristóbal compran estos hongos y es una fuente de ingresos para las mujeres que se ocupan de ellos. Las mujeres además son instruidas en el bordado. Las mujeres reciben todo el dinero que resulta de la venta de sus propias artesanías. Hay además un local de ropa usada en la entrada de Hogar Comunitario al igual que hay una tienda llamada ‘Trauma’ ubicada en Real de Guadalupe la cual vende la artesanía de las mujeres. Se espera que la fuente de ingresos de estas artesanías ayude a prevenir que mujeres trabajen como empleadas domesticas en casas privadas donde a veces son explotadas o mal pagadas.

AMIGOS financia parcialmente al psicólogo quien enseña autoestima, responsabilidad y ayuda a las mujeres a tratar con sus problemas individuales que resultaron en embarazo y en incapacidad para apoyarse a si mismas. Estas cuestiones importantes involucran abuso, pena, abandono por sus parejas y familias, etc. El psicólogo además da talleres a los niños de estas madres. Un psicólogo recientemente dejo Hogar Comunitario y se mudo a Cuernavaca pero un nuevo psicólogo fue recientemente contratado.

Este centro ciertamente hace una significante contribución a mujeres Mexicanas e indígenas aquí en el área de San Cristóbal. Y los fondos de AMIGOS para la contratación de un buen psicólogo son cruciales para el cuidado y tratamiento de estas mujeres. Sospecho, sin embargo, que no muchas mujeres son conscientes del lugar Hogar Comunitario y me pregunto como esta información podría estar más disponible. Además me pregunto si hay otras aptitudes lucrativas que las mujeres podrían aprender; aptitudes que no compitan con otras mujeres que venden artesanías similares en las calles.

On July 23, 2008, Melanie Evans and I made a follow-up visit to HOGAR COMUNITARIO. We spoke with Jutta, a staff member who took us on a tour of the facility. Hogar Comunitario cares
for single women in their last month of pregnancy, provides nurse mid-wives for delivery of their babies and continues this care for one month following the delivery. The children of these mothers are also cared for during this two month period. Very few babies are given up for adoption. This facility has a capacity to care for 6 mothers and their children. During our visit we learned that one of the pregnant women was only eleven years old! At the time of our visit all 6 beds were full to capacity. During their stay the women are trained in marketable skills so that they can survive on their own and care for their children. Pre-natal classes as well as classes in nutrition are also provided.
We toured the enlarged pottery-making area, the children's workshop area, the general workshop patio and the organic mushroom "garden" on the roof. There are plans to enlarge the mushroom garden as restaurants in San Cristobal eagerly purchase these mushrooms and it is a source of income for the women who tend them. The women are also taught embroidery work. The individual women receive the money that results from the sale of their personal crafts. There is also a used clothing outlet in the entrance of Hogar Comunitario as well as a store called Trauma located on Real de Guadalupe which sells the women's crafts. It is hoped that the source of income from these crafts would help to prevent the women from working as domestics in private homes where they are too often exploited and grossly underpaid.
AMIGOS partially funds the psychologist who teaches self-esteem, responsibility and helps the women to deal with the individual life issues that resulted in their pregnancies and inability to support themselves. These important issues involve abuse, shame, abandonment by their partners and families, etc. The psychologist also gives workshops to the children of these mothers A psychologist recently left Hogar Comunitario and moved to Cuernavaca but a new psychologist was recently hired.
This facility certainly makes a significant contribution to both Mexican and Indigenous women here in the San Cristobal area. And the funding from AMIGOS for a good psychologist is crucial to the care and treatment of these women. I suspect, however, that not many women are aware of Hogar Comunitario and wonder how this information might be made more available. I also wonder if there are other marketable skills that the women could learn; skills that do not compete with other women selling similar crafts on the streets.
